Real Sword type 56-1 (AK with folding stock) reliability of internals
I often read that the Real Sword AKs externals are very tough and sturdy like the real ones. A truck could drive over it and it would survive it seems.
I was wondering more about the internals. Now that people have been using them for a while, what is the verdict on the durability of internal parts (mechbox, hop-up, wiring, ...)? How easy are they to replace since some parts are proprietary to the real sword AKs? Thanks!

Internals are tough as nails. Everything is reinforced out of the box. Replacement parts (the few proprietary ones) are readily available from Redwolf (not sure who else carries them).
The biggest (and only issue) I'm aware of is people have issues with the hopup. I've had no such issues with mine, but that seems to be the issue that seems to pop up repeatedly. And to the best of my knowledge, it's a standard AK hopup unit, meaning it's easy to replace if it becomes problematic. If you get one of the old guns that shoots 300-ish FPS, it's a good idea to replace the hopup rubber with a soft type, as the hard rubber will overhop at low velocities. If you have one of the newer ones with the high velocity, the stock rubber is fine.

i've also heard rumours that the internals are not TM compatible?can anybody confirm this?thanks

Some are, some aren't. The gearbox is about 5mm shorter than a standard V3 to fit into a real steel AK, so the shell isn't compatible. The piston is equally 5mm shorter and 1 tooth short to make up for this. Likewire, the sector gear also has 1 tooth less. The antireversal latch is also proprietary, as it has an external spring release mechanism, although can be replaced with a standard ARL if you don't mind losing that functionality.
That's pretty much it. Everything else internally.

Once again Crunch, you're very helpful. I didn't find any long term reviews of the Real Sword AKs so I wondered if it was a bundle of problems or pretty safe.
I currently have a TM AK47 so since all the mags, tightbore and hop-up units and such are compatible I was investigating the Real Sword...

Crunch : I have read different versions for mag compatibility for the Real Sword AKs.
Are they marui-compatible or not?

I agree with everything mentioned above.
The only niggle I have with mine is sometimes the selector will seize. It seems to happen randomly but goes away after. I have no idea of the cause. |

Isn't that technically a "yes", with the caveat that "modification are required"? Something is "compatible" as long as it can be modified to work, provided that the modification doesn't get too much. Shaving down the rear lug isn't too big a deal.

Well Most AK mags on the market are compatible with Real Sword Type 56 but just a matter of less or more modification than other. I have no problem with MAG waffle 120 rounds. They fit smugly than the original real sword, no rattle at all.

I have both the RS Type 56 and RS Type 56-1. Both have a muzzle velocity slightly < 400 FPS.
Both have a tendency to hop up at the end of their effective range even when using .28's and .30's. The effective range is more than adequate as I have hit torso sized targets at roughly 150ft. That's ever so slightly just before when the "over hop" occurs. However, I do plan to change the the hop up to a guarder clear / shredders concave spacer set up in the near future. MAG AK waffle mags work fine on my 56. They also rattle substantially less than my RS mid caps. My 56-1 cannot use the MAG AK waffle wags at all. Both of my Reals Sword 56's have the same selector seize issue that Mr. Evolution descirbed previously. It's hapened at least twice for each of them IIRC.

I haven't had a problem fitting any metal high cap mags into the RS. Some are tighter (RS AK mags are like the real thing and wobble like mad, but don't misfeed) than others, but they've all fit to date. The only mags I've had issue with is plastic mags. I have a box of KA 110 rnd mags where I had to lightly dremel the lip that locks under the mag catch. Those lips tend to be a bit thick on plastic mags. I've tried KA, MAG and DBoys AK plastic mags and it was the same with all. I haven't had any issues with metal mags.
So basically, it's a 30 second job with a Dremel and sanding wheel to "mod" them to fit. I've had this happen. Turns out a BB had somehow managed to squeeze itself between the receiver and mechbox and was interfering with the switching mechanism. Take a look to see if the same didn't happen to yours.

You can shave down the magazine catch on the RS with a thin file. Only need to take off a bit and TM mags will pop right in.
